I spent more time talking with Tom, Nowetah's husband, than viewing the museum. I enjoyed his stories, and his knowledge of Maine tribes.
Items are labeled with surprisingly detailed information: some of the labels are visible in photos I've submitted for this place, and show how much care has gone into the collection.
The museum is full from one side to the other and speaking with Tom was great especially when I mentioned I was from UMA. I was happy to share with him that I was going to be there for a project. He was happy to ask questions and wondered what I had read in school and ask trivia questions. Then mentioned some specific questions about the tribes in Maine.
Nice stuff
Loved this place. The store and museum are in one builsing. The attendant was very informative about the indian tribes.
The museum itself contains a huge number of items from tribes all across North America. One room is full of hundreds of baskets. I admired one tiny basket with delicate "periwinkle" feet made of curls of grass. I had no time for them all, but hope to return again.
